The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

Throughout this animated journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are supposed to be entitled types, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
